Tony Van Amsterdam began exploring expressionist painting in the winter of 2008. The introduction of lighting components into Tony’s work helped magnify his painting practice and give it an identifiable allure.  “I was making work on canvas, and I wanted something that added depth to the pieces.  The lighting is a way to synthesise the technical attention that I need to succeed as a tattoo artist with the loose approach to painting that produces good abstraction.  It also gives the work a real backlit POP!”.
